Bugonia is nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Four nominations. Emma Stone is a producer on the film and a lead actress nominee — the second time she has held both credits on the same picture. The first was Poor Things.
This is Lanthimos' fifth film to receive Oscar nominations, after Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Favourite, and Poor Things. The trajectory is no longer eccentric. It is a body of work the Academy keeps returning to.
The film is a remake of the 2003 Korean thriller Save the Green Planet. Stone plays a pharmaceutical CEO kidnapped by two men who believe she is an alien sent to destroy Earth. It is a dark comedy about paranoia, corporate power, and the distance between what people believe and what is real.
Lanthimos has never won an Oscar. Stone has won two. If Bugonia takes Best Picture, the credit goes to both — and to a collaboration that now spans three films and has produced seven combined nominations from this one alone.
