Sentimental Value is a Norwegian film with nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Joachim Trier directed Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgard in a story about two sisters, an estranged father, and a final project that forces everyone to stop performing and start telling the truth.
It won the Grand Prix at Cannes. Skarsgard took the Golden Globe for Supporting Actor. It made $7.8 million at the box office. The Academy doesn't usually nominate films this quiet for the top prize.
The question is not whether it wins. It is whether a film this precise, this personal, and this deliberately small can shift what the Best Picture conversation looks like going forward.
